Fishing & Meat Production Flashcards
Pole
Catch fish one at a time. Lowest bycatch.
Longline
Trail long line behind the boat. Baited hooks are attached to attract target fish. Can have a negative impacts on non-target fish, birds, and other organisms
Gilnets
A wall/curtain of net hanging in the water. Size of fish caught depends on net meshing. High bycatch.
Purse Seine
Used for dense schools of single-species fish (tuna, mackerel). Vertical (cylindrical) net surrounds fish, bottom is closed. Low bycatch
Pots and traps
Made from wood, wire, or plastic. Used for crustacean capture (crabs, lobsters). Dropped on seabed for about 24 hours at a time.
Dredging
Rigid structures towed along the seabed. A bar dislodges shellfish as it drags over the sediment (benthic zones).
Pelagic Trawl
Cone shaped net closed at one end to trap fish. Pulled through midwaters
Acoustic technology used to determine fish location
High risk of bycatch if no preventative measures.
Bottom Trawl
Cone shaped net closed at one end to trap fish. Can capture high volumes of fish. VERY high environmental impact on seabed. HIGH rates of bycatch.
