Fishing Flashcards
What is fishing
Activity of catching aquatic animals, aprox 75% of the total world catch is for human consumption.
Different types of fishing
Coastal fishing
Inshore fishing
Offshore fishing
Coastal Fishing
Practised near the coast in small boats using traditional methods like harpoons and small nets. Catch is used for self consumptionor sale at local markets
Inshore fishing
Carried out near the coast in small or medium sized boats. Fishing tackle depends on which fish is caught. Boats use refrigeraters to presurve the catch.
Offshore or commercial fishing
Takes place at sea on large factory ships, modern instruments are used to detect schools of fish many ships have facilities to cut clean and package and freeze the catch so they can stay at sea for weeks.
Where are fish caught?
Fish are caught in fishing grounds areas where fish naturaly concentrate. Best are along contenental shelves. Access is controled by the international maritime law. Coastal areas have special permission to fish up to 370 km from their coasts (The exclusive rights zone) Governments must make arangements to access other countries EEZ

Aquaculture´s advantages
Increases the supply of fish and seafood and prevents the extinction of species, fish production is cheaper, takes places in fresh and saltwater, allows abundant and varied productionand is less restictive than commercial fishing.
What is aquaculture
Fish farms and other techniques that are used to breed and raise aquatic organisms such as algea, fish and crustaceans
Fishing
The sea provides many natural reasorces, food minerals and energy 71% of the Earth is covered in water, the ocean plays an important role in our lives. “Blue economy”
Fishing methods
Trawling
Seine fishing
Trap nets
Longlines
Trawling
Boats drag a cone-shaped net along the bottom of the sea. Damages biodiversity, imposible to be selective. Regulated not banned.
Seine fishing
Fishing vessels detect banks of fish with a radar. They surround them with a circular net trapping the fish inside (commonly horse mackerel and sardines)
Trap nets
Mazes made of netting are installed close to the coast in places where tuna often pass through as they migrate.
