Fish: Wildlife Flashcards
Vertebrate
Has a backbone
Vertebral Column
The back bone and/or spinalcolumn
Neural Crest
migratory cell population unique to vertebrates that gives rise to a diverse cell lineage including melanocytes, craniofacial cartilage and bone, smooth muscle, peripheral and enteric neurons and glia
Closed Circulatory System
structured, always carried the blood inside the blood vessels. The vessels make up the pumping circut of the body and can be found around the whole thing
Cycloid Scales
appear to be the inner layer of ganoid or cosmoid scales. Found in carps and similar fishes, they are thin, large, round or oval, and arranged in an overlapping pattern; growth rings are evident on the free edges.
Placoid Scales
Tough scales that cover the skin of things like sharks and rays.
Ganoid Scales
Hard outer layer
Gills
Used on sea animals to extract oxygen out of the water and put it into the blood stream. Their way of breathing.
Lateral Line
system of sense organs found in aquatic vertebrates, mainly fish, used to detect movement and vibration in the surrounding water.
Spawning
external method of reproduction where the female releases many unfertilised eggs into the water. At the same time, a male or many males release a lot of sperm into the water which fertilises some of these eggs.
Jaw-less Fish
Marine and freshwater fish lacking a jaw and apendages
Cartilaginous Fish
fish with a skeleton made of cartilage.
Bony Fish
Fish with the skeleton made of bone. teeth are also fixed onto the upper jaw.
Lobe-finned Fish
Have a central appendage in their fins containing many bones and muscles.
long fish with a stubby tail
Bowfish/Dogfish
