Myxinoidea
Hagfishes - the only craniates that are not vertebrates
They have a skull but no vertebral column (backbone)
Petromyzontia
Lampreys - the only jawless vertebrates
Form the sister roux to all jawed vertebrates. There are about 40 species of living lampreys
Chondrichthyes
Cartilaginous fishes - jawed fishes with internal skeletons made of cartilage, rather than bone.
Elasmobranchs
The largest group of cartilaginous fishes, including sharks and rays
Osteichthyes
Bony Fishes - Jawed fished with bony, calcified skeletons
Sarcopterygii
Lobe-Finned Fishes and Tetrapods - Bony fishes with lobed fins.
these fishes were the ancestors of all limbed land vertebrates.
Actinopterygii
Ray-finned Fishes - Bony fished with ray fins built from a fan of narrow bone or cartilage rods.
Teleosts
Ray-finned fishes with mobile mouths, due to moveable upper jaws, and symmetrical (homocercal) tail fins.
Euteleosts
Modern ray-finned fishes — the majority of teleosts.
Acanthomorpha
Spiny-rayed fishes -Euteleosts with true bony spines in their dorsal, anal and pelvic fins
Acanthopterygains
Spiny-rayed fishes with jaws that can be protruded when feeding.
This group includes about half of all fish species.
Percomorphs
The largest most diverse group of fishes and the most advanced spiny-rayed fishes. Percomorphs share several structural features.
Perciformes
Perchlike fishes - Percomorphs with spines and soft rays in their dorsal and anal fins.
