fish cards Flashcards
aquaculture
The breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes, oceans, and land-based facilities.
CAAP (concentrated aquatic animal production)
used when describing aquaculture production.
fishery
used to describe different types of aquaculture operations.
fish farming
aquaculture is sometimes referred to fish farming.
marine aquaculture
the production of species of aquatic plants and animals that live in ocean (saltwater)
mariculture
the farming of Marin organisms
freshwater aquaculture
the production of aquatic life that is native to rivers, lakes, and streams, or spends the majority of its life in freshwater
hatcheries
production facilities focused on breeding, nursing, and rearing fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants to fry, fingerling, or juvenile stages.
fry
young fish ready to begin eating on their own
fingerlings
are small, young fish under one year.
ponds
are bodies of standing water that area\ usually smaller than a lake
raceways
straight-sided channels typically made of poured concrete or concrete blocks.
silos
deep round aquaculture tanks that are usually belowground.
net pens
mesh enclosures suspended in a body of water from a rigid structure on the water’s surface.
marine cages
aquaculture enclosures with rigid frames on all sides.
salinity
is the dissolved salt content of the water.
dissolved oxygen (DO) the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in the water
aeration
(adding oxygen to the water) to maintain the oxygen saturation of the water.
intensive recirculating aquaculture system (IRAS)
aquaculture system that filters water from the tanks so it can be reused within the tanks.
anadromous
means they are born in freshwater, migrate to sea and return to freshwater to spawn (reproduce)
