Fish biology and anatomy (1) Flashcards
Fish
It is cold blooded (Ectotherm - poikilotherm) aquatic animal (can’t regulate its own temperature but it depends on temperature of surrounding) because it don’t have temperature regulatory center in hypothalamus , covered with scales
…. haven’t scales
Cat fish
Character of fish
- Presence of gills (breathing organ) - all fishes must have it
- Presence of scales on body
- Presence of fins
- presence of lateral line for sensation
Dolphin has ….
no gills because it is from mammals
Difference between Fish & Fishes
Fish :
group of fish from single fish species
Fishes :
group of fish from different fish species
Operculum
Gill cover protecting gills
Teleosti types
Soft rayed (Lower Teleosts)
Spiny rayed (Higher Teleosts)
Soft rayed Fins
supported by soft rays (easily movable, jointed bone)
Spiny rayed fins
Some fins supported with bony spine (a jointed, Mineralized bone)
Soft rayed scales
Have Cycloid scales (smooth Cd. border)
Spiny rayes scales
Have Ctenoid scales (toothlike extensions on Cd. border)
More advanced
Spiny rayed
Soft rayed swim bladder
Have Physostomous swim bladder (Connected to esophagus)
Spiny rayed swim bladder
Have Physoclistous swim bladder (no connection to esophagus)
Soft rayed pelvic fin
Abdominal - Sub abdominal
Spiny rayed pelvic fin
Thoracic – Jugular
Physostomous Swim bladder
Connected to esophagus by pneumatic duct
Soft rayed fishes
Fish open its mouth and the air goes to esophagus then to swim bladder
Physoclistous Swim bladder
No connection to esophagus
Spiny rayed fishes
Blood vessels that surround the swim bladder exchange air with it (Diffusion)
Why Swim bladder lies below vertebral column?
When swim bladder filled with air the density of fish will decrease so the fish will go up End to get down the fish must empty swim blood
Abdominal Pelvic fin
Near to anal fin
Sub abdominal Pelvic fin
In the mid space between anal and pectoral fin
Thoracic Pelvic fin
Below the pectoral fin
jugular Pelvic fin
In front of the pectoral fin
Why we study fish morphology?
- Where the fish lives ? (Water column) → To make polyculture
- How the fish eats ?
