Phase 1
Race for the Sea
Britain halted the German advance through neutral Belgium and Northern France, to stop Germany getting hold of Belgian and French ports
Phase 2
Static Trench Warfare 1915-1917
A front line was established running through Belgium and Northern France, both sides established trench systems. STALEMATE
Phase 3
War of Movement 1918
German high command decided to push against the allies on the Western Front. It was short lived and the allies had defeated the German army.
Battle of Mons
First British battle.
Vastly outnumbered by superior German force.
1600 British casualties.
Stalemate
First battle of Ypres was a blood bath.
Many young German soldiers died and Britain lost 50,000 BUT held on to Ypres.
Conventional warfare not working as the land was very flat.
