First Two Weeks Flashcards
What is the bobbin case
Holds the bobbin in the machine and regulates the tension of the bobbin thread; may be removable or stationary
What is the bobbin winder
Winds the thread onto the bobbin
What is the feed dog
Teeth that move the fabric under the presser foot, advancing the fabric one stitch at a time
What is the hand wheel
Controls the movement of the take up lever, can be turned by hand to raise or lower needle
What is the needle clamp screw
Holds the needle firmly in the machine ; loosed and tightened by a screw
What is the power and light switch
Turns on the machine and light
What is the presser foot
Holds the fabric against the feed dogs as you stitch. Raises and lowers the presser foot
What is the pressure regulator
Adjust the amount of pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric. Regulates tension on needles thread by tightening or loosening
What is the reverse stitch control
Button or lever that allows backwards stitching
What are spool pins
Holds spool of thread that feeds the top stitching side of fabric
What are stitching guidelines
Keep edge of fabric aligned so seam allowences will be uniform in width
What are stitch length controls
Regulates the length of the stitch. -(about 10 stitches per inch for regular seam stitching and stay stitching )
WhT is the stitch selector
Regulates the selection different stitching patterns, including Zigzag, stretch stitch, and decorative stitches
What is the stitch width control
Regulates width of zig zag, stitching and positions the needle for straight stitching
What is take up lever
Controls the amount of thread pulled from the spool to the needle for each stitch, moves up and down as you stitch
What is thread guidelines
Helps guide upper thread from spool to needle without tangling
What is the throat guide
Located directly under the needle and surrounds the feed dog: usually has a seam with guide lines to help keep stitching straight
What are sewing scissors
Used to trim and clip seams and threads
What is dressmakers shears
Used only for cutting fabric
What is the rotary cutter
Round, retractable blade for cutting fabric
What is the seam ripper
Removes stitches and takes out seams
What is pinking shears
Cuts a zigzag edge to finish seams
What is the cutting mat
A flat self healing surface used for cutting
What is a straight pin
Aids in pinning pattern to fabric for cutting
What is a sewing gauge
Used to measure short distances, has a moveable indicator
What is a tape measure
Used to measure fabric, grain lines and body
What is a skirt marker
Device for measuring hem lengths accurately
What is a meter or yard stick
For adjustments to pattern or check grain lines
What is a transparent ruler
Used to cut straight edges with the rotary cutter
What is dressmakers tracing paper
Paper that comes in colours to mark fabric
What is tailors chalk
Removable substance that is used for temporary marking
What is a marking pen or pencil
Can be sharpened to give thin line and removed by doing laundry
What is a tracing wheel
Device with teeth that is used to transfer markings on to fabric from pattern
What is thread and hand needle
Used to make thread tracings or tailors tacks
What is a thimble
Metal plastic or leather object that fits over middle finger for sewing
What are hand sewing needles
Have sharp point on one end and an eye on the other
What are straight pins
Used to attach pattern to fabric or hold fabric pieces together before sewing
What is the buttonhole twist
Strong thread that is used for hand sewing or sewing on buttons
What is the needle threader
Small device with thin metal wire that helps thread a needle
What is polyester thread
A synthetic thread that is best for synthetic fabrics and knits
What is a pin cushion
Object that holds pins
What is cotton thread
Strong thread that is used for hand sewing or sewing in buttons
What is a loop turner
Twisted fibres that are used to hold cotton fabrics together
Can students use equipment without teacher present
No
Can you put large fabric on floor
No
Where should u put back packs
Under table
What way do u rip a seam ripper
Away from u
What way do u hand scissors to another person
Handle first
How do u position an iron board
So no one can walk around or behind it
Do u check the temp of iron by touching soul plate
No
Always do what before sewing
Close the bobbin cover
What do u do if the fabric does not feed through
Turn off power, lift the presser foot to lift out fabric
Sewing machines should not be left unattended when?
Plugged in
Rest the iron on what
It’s heel
To run the machine press the what
Foot control pedal
What does a handwheel do
Controls the movement of the take up lever and needle; can be controlled by hand or power; should always be turned towards you
What does thread tension control do
Adjusts tension on the thread as required for a particular project
What does bobbin do
Holds thread inside machine
What does presser foot do
Holds fabric in place while you sew
What does bobbin windle spindle do
Holds the bobbin while winding the bobbin
What does the take up lever do
Pulls thread from the spool
What does foot control do
Controls how fast the sewing machine sews
What does feed dog do
Moves fabric as you sew
What does the bobbin case do
Holds the bobbin, allows the bobbin to then and stitch; provides bobbin tension
What does reverse control do
Allows to stitch backwards
What does spool pin do
Holds the spool of thread in place
What does stitch width control do
Sets the width of the zigzag stitch
What does bobbin wonder tension do
Provides tension on thread when winding bobbin
What does presser foot lever do
Lifts and lowers the presser foot
What kind of water do u put in irons and why
Distilled so that the calcium doesn’t build up inside
Why is there a temp setting on iron
Different fabrics require different temps
What is the purpose of a pressing cloth
Separates the fabric and iron to avoid stains and scorching
Why is it important to iron with the grain of the fabric
So that iron will flatten the seams without misshaping or stretching them
When ironing cloths where do u start
Small are to back to front
Why should u iron dark dull fabric on wrong side
To prevent shiny spot
Why do y want to have cotton and linen to damp
They would wrinkle to much to press well without being damp
What does press as you go mean
Press each seam while u sew it
Why should u press seams flat before pressing them open
It flattens and sets the stitches so the seam lays smooth and flatter
What is pressing
Using a lifting and lowering motion
What is ironing
Using a sliding motion is
How should a straight seam usually be pressed
Press flat and then open
