Q

what are contour lines

2 points

A

contour lines are lines that join points of equal heights above sea level.
each line represents a certain height above sea level (50m,100m)
contour lines are used to display topography (ex: hills valleys, rivers, etc)

Q

3 things to remeber about contour lines

A

a) 2 contour lines that are running side by side represent a slope
b) the closer contour lines are the steeper the slope
c) contour lines that join and create shapes such as circles or ovals represent mountains or hills

Q

what is a contour interval?

A

a contour interval is a vertical difference that exists between two different contour lines.
(ex. the difference in height between 2 contour lines of 25 meters and 50 meters is 25 meters therefore the contour interval is 25.)

Q

what are lines of latitude?

A

parallels of latitude are concentric circles that get smaller/diminish in diameter(size) from the equator to the north/south poles. there are also used to determine the locations north or south of the equator.

Q

what are lines of longitude

A

they are called meridians and they pass through north and south poles crossing all parallels(lines) of latitude at right angles.(the prime meridian runs through Greenwich)

Q

Why do we have seasons?

A

The earth rotates on its axis of a 23.5 tilt,

the earth revolves around the sun with the tilt remaining stationary.

5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY(IMPORTANT)

A

location- is a place defined by its longitude and latitude
the two types of locations
a) relative location- a place connected or related to a place
b)Absolute location is a very accurate location defined by longitude and latitude

place
- geographers look at the characteristics that distinguish one place from another.(landforms, climate, language, etc)

human/Environmental interaction
-geographers study the way humans interact positivity and negativity with the environment, they also study the lasting effects of the interactions

-movement
transportation how and why people travel from one place to another
this also includes food transportation and oil,etc

-regions
a region is a unit on the earth’s surface that has unifying characters such as climate or industry.

Q

how do gps work?(global positioning system)

A
IMPORTANT NOTE( you need at least 3 satellites for a GPS to be accurate and work)
GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a precise orbit. Each satellite transmits a unique signal and orbital parameters that allow GPS devices to find the precise location of the satellite, GPS use this info and trilateration to calculate a users exact location.

Q

three types of scales

A

direct statment
-one cm represents one km

representative fraction
no units of measurement

scale line
a scale that represents the measure of distances

Q

why do countour lines point towards the source of stream

A

V-shaped contour lines point upstream when they cross a river. Downward erosion decreases the elevation of the land, and that loss in elevation is reflected in the contour lines.
