Hamiltons 3 reports**
Report on Public credit- in national debt. Foreign debt (France) and domestic debt (within the country). State debt (each state has individual debt) Hamilton- pay back all debt to prove they are reliable, but national gov should take the state debt to pay back states.Jefferson- doesn’t want to pay back because money wont go back to actual bond owners. State debt (he didn’t want national gov to take debt because not equal)
Report on Bank of US- States individual (each own currency). Bonds (give state 15$ in 10 yrs you have 30$). Taxes will be part of federal founds (go to national bank). Jefferson- says it is not in the constitution but it was necessary for country
Manufacturing Report- Hamilton wants mercantilism (we should let people invest in building factories). Jefferson-

Strict- that anything not in the constitution is not allowed
Broad- anything that is not in the constitution is allowed
Regionalism
Supporting your region, north vs south. Example: Hartford convention. Also called sectionalism
Neutrality
French revolution- said that we were not on ether side of the war, we cant help anyone (no trade supplies that aren’t neutral). Embargo Act
Right of Deposit
Part of Louisiana purchase. Allowed US merchants to store things at New Orleans without a price. Lead to Washington looking for more land for the US
Whiskey rebellion
Tax on whiskey. Washington sent troops to go against his own people. Jefferson didn’t like that. Separates politics even more
Jays treaty
Sent Jay to stop the English from taking sailors. Get the british to leave the forts in the great lakes during the french revolution but they still took back sailors. It started to develop political parities.
Louisiana purchase
French sell west land for really cheep. sold by guy who really needed the money. Buying land was not in the constitution. Jefferson starts to go against his own beliefs. Gives- More farms and more power to the states more democratic- republicans (pro farm people)
War of 1812
War on England vs US over the embargo act. White house burnt down. It just ended because the french revolution was over (no more embargo act).
Embargo Act 1807
Jefferson. Ports from the US are closed. Merchants lose big part of sale. Leads to the war of 1812. Leads to the death of the federalist party because the federalist (merchants) wanted to get rid of the embargo act.
Hartford convention
Federalist made amendments that never pass because they were un-American
Dolly Madison
She saved all the important artifacts from the white house before it burned during the war of 1812. Becomes a role model for the country.

Jefferson (strict rule follower of constitution) if it is not in the constitution then there cant be a bank.
Hamilton says that since it is not in the constitution that it is allowed to have a national bank
Washington’s views on political parties
Federalist. Political parities were bad because they would break up the government

Federalist parities dead (more land bought, more farmers so more antifederalist)

Decline caused because of Hartford convention. Accomplishments promoted mercantilism and cities.
George Washington
He wasn’t power crazy (didn’t take position at first) federalist. Understood working class. Constructive. Government run by people
Thomas Jefferson
plantain family. anyone with good education could run the gov. strict view on constitution. pro farms. Anti federalist.
Alexander Hamilton
Born in the Caribbean. Cant be president, and no home town (could look at the whole country).Federalist (broad interpretation of the constitution). Strong central gov. Mercantilism
John Adams
2 president. federalist. not as important as Washington. Smooth transition between him and Washington
James Madison
President during 1912 war. Democratic republican. Smooth transition
Article 1 section 8 of constitution
Elastic clause. Allows the constitution to expand (broad vs strict). Resolves problems of having a national bank or not
