Definition of Counseling
Counseling - Conceived as a process concerned with helping normally functioning or healthy people to achieve their goals or to function more appropriately.
Definition of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is Usually conceptualized as a therapeutic intervention that is - Reconstructive, remedial, in-depth work with individuals who suffer from mental disorders or who evidence serious coping deficiencies.
Neurosis
a relatively mild mental illness that is not caused by organic disease, involving symptoms of stress (depression, anxiety, obsessive behavior, hypochondria) but not a radical loss of touch with reality… Any one of a variety of mental disorders characterized by significant anxiety or other distressing emotional symptoms, such as persistent and irrational fears, obsessive thoughts, compulsive acts, dissociative states, and somatic and depressive reactions. The symptoms do not involve gross personality disorganization, total lack of insight, or loss of contact with reality”
Psychosis
“a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality”..
A person’s thoughts and perceptions are disturbed and the individual may have difficulty understanding what is real and what is not…Symptoms of psychosis include delusions (false beliefs) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that others do not see or hear)…incoherent or nonsense speech, and behavior that is inappropriate for the situation…(NIMH, 2019)
Definition of a theory
A theory can be defined as a set of statements one uses to explain data for a given issue. Theories help people make sense out of the event that they observe.
Provides the means by which predictions can be made and it points out the relationships between concepts and techniques.
Def. Belief
A belief can be defined as a judgment of the relationship between an object and some characteristic of the object.
Beliefs vs. Values
Beliefs can be distinguished from values because beliefs merely represent how an individual perceives the world. In contrast, values contain propositions about what should be – What I ought to strive for and the things one ought to avoid.
