First Ass Flashcards

1
Q

Formation of a v shaped valley

A

Fast water causes erosion and makes a deep notch in the land

Abrasion scrapes along the sides and bottom and hydraulic action breaks down the sides

Freeze thaw then loosens soil and rocks which fall into water

When the river meets harder rock it bends around it causing interlocking spurs Making the valley

Q

Water fall formation

A

Water passes over hard and soft rock eroding the soft faster creating an overhang due to hydraulic action. Then hard rock will fall under its own weight feeling the river bed making a plunge pool. It is then picked up by the water eroding soft rock even faster leaving a gorge

Q

Meander formation

A

In a straight river pools and riffles develope as water twists around large things

Then a helicoidal flow is made which moves mats from outside of a meander bend and puts it inside

Fast water has more energy to erode on the outside making a river cliff

Continues erosion on the outback and. Depositioning on the inner will form a meander

Q

Ox bow lake

A

As the process of the meander continues the neck of the meander will get narrower overtime during a flood this will be breached and water will create a straight channel

As this channel forms water will travel round the meander slower

The decrease leads to high levels of deposition at the start and exit of the meander until it’s blocked off

This leaves an ox bow lake

Q

Podzol formation

A

Low temperatures lead to slow decomposition.needles and cones make acidic humus High precipitation leads to leaching which is the downward movement of the aluminium and iron oxides, this leads to formation of an iron pan Eluviation leaves an ash grey A horizon.
Illuviation leads to a reddish brown B horizon.
