What is Periodization?
patterns, order. building short term narrative of history
What was Medieval Europe?
fragmented power, codes of chivalry, church central to life, Latin, language of educated elite. Architecture didn’t make much of an impact
What was Medieval Japan?
similarities with Europe (knights, castles, chivalry). their architecture influenced it forever by tea houses.
what was 500 - 1200 sometimes seen as?
Dark Ages, where nothing progressed until the Crusades.
What did Crusaders bring back?
Tastes, ideals, spices, textiles, pottery
what was created during the Crusades?
the plough, an agricultural advancement. better crops as the population increased.
what did some call the church?
Some scholars called the church the ‘Golden Thread’ through the Middle Ages.
What was the formal structure of the church?
Pope, Cardinal, Bishop, Parish
