How do you summon help in hospital and outside hospital?
- In hospital: shout for help, pull emergency buzzer and call 2222
- Outside hospital: shout for help and call 999 or 112
What information do you need to give when calling 999?
Telephone number
Location
Number of casualties
Type and severity of injury
Hazards
Explain the 5 parts of the primary survey
Danger: Check for danger to casualty, first aider and any bystanders
Response: Check if the casualty is responsive, speak to them touch their shoulders and pinch their ear lobes
Airway: check to see if there is anything in their mouth, open their airway by doing head tilt chin lift.
Breathing: Check to see if the casualty is breathing. Look listen and feel for no more than 10 seconds. If they are not breathing call 999
Circulation: check for bleeding or any other life-threatening injuries
What are the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis?
Itchy red rash
Face neck hands and feet can swell
Diarrhoea and vomiting
Difficulty breathing
Confusion and agitation
Signs of shock
What is the treatment for anaphylaxis?
Call 999
Administer epipen if they have one
Monitor breathing
What are the signs and symptoms of shock?
Pale, sweaty and clammy
Rapid weak pulse
Breathless
Thirsty

What is the treatment of shock?
Lie down
Elevate legs
Call 999
Keep warm
Monitor
What are the signs and symptoms of a heart attack?
Chest pain

Weak thready pulse

Sit comfortably (W postion)
Call 999
Give GTN (if they have it)

Break in the skin
Visible blood loss
Can be oozing or spurting
What is the treatment for bleeding?
Cover wound
Apply pressure
Elevate
Redress if necessary
What are the signs and symptoms of seizure?
Loss of consciousness
Twitching
Shaking
Absence
What is the treatment for seizure?
Lie down
Protect the head
Give space- Move objects away they could hurt themselves on
Losen tight clothing
Time seizure
Call 999 id first seizure or seizure unusually long for them.
What are the signs and symptoms of Hypoglycaemia?
Weak, pale or dizzy
Sweaty
Confused
Loss of consciousness
What is the treatment for hypoglycaemia?
Sit down
Give sugary drink or food
Monitor
No improvement call 999
What are the signs and symptoms of burns/scalds?
Redness
Blisters
White waxy skin
Charred Skin
What is the treatment for burns/scalds?
Cool for 20 minutes
Remove jewellery if possible
Cover with cling film (accept chemical)
Assess for further treatment
999 depending on severity
What does DNA CPR stand for?
Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Why is it important that DNA CPR is clearly documented in patients’ records?
It ensure that all staff are aware that CPR should not be attempted
It prevents futile of inappropriate CPR being attempted
