When is there no need to keep or document on a Medication Administration Record (MAR).
If your customer is totally independent with managing and self-administering their medicines.
PRN Meaning?
PRN ‘when required’
therefore, means a medication that should be taken only as needed.
Pain medicines, sleeping pills and cough medicines are common examples of PRN medicines.
Can you administer PRN medication?
PRN medication should only be signed for on the Medication Administration Record (MAR) as and when the medication is administered.
For example, if your customer has a headache You must then sign the Medication Administration Record (MAR) and complete the notes on the reverse side, explaining what medication was taken and why it was needed.
Right to refuse medication
A customer has the right to refuse medication.
In the case where your customer refuses medication you should:
- Mark the refusal of medication on the Medication Administration Record (MAR) using the code R = Refused
- Complete the notes on the reverse side of the Medication Administration Record (MAR)
- Make a note of the refusal in your customer’s Daily Log
- Contact your manager, branch or support office before leaving your customer
