what should you do if a baby is choking?
- give up to 5 back blows
place the baby on you knee with their face faced down toward the ground, then hit them firmly between the shoulder blades - give up to 5 chest thrusts
- call 999
what should you do if someone has a fever?
- check their temperature
- keep them cool and comfortable, remove excess clothes and give them lots of cold water or diluted juice
- give recommended dose of paracetamol
- keep an eye on them
what should you do when someone has a nose bleed
- pinch the soft part of thier nose and ask them to lean forward
- continue to pinch for 10 minutes
- seek medical advice if bleeding conintues for more than half an hour
what should you do with an unresponsive but BREATHING baby?
- move them onto thier side and tilt thier head back
- call 999
what should you do with an unrepsponive and NOT BREATHING BABY
- call 999
- give them 5 rescue breaths
- title their head back, seal your mouth over their mouth and nose. Blow five times into the baby
- give 30 chest compressions
- push firmly in the middle of their chest with TWO FINGERS so that chest goes inward, then release - give 2 rescue breaths. continue with cycles of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until help arrives
what should you do when someone has an Asthma attack?
- help them sit in a comfortable position and take thier inhaler
- reassure them, if the attack gets worse, OR THEY DONT HAVE AN INHALER, CALL 999
what to do when someone is bleeding heavily
- put pressure on the wound with whatever is available
- call 999
- keep pressure on wound till help arrives
what do you do if someone burns or scalds themeslves
- cool the burn under cold running water for at least 20 minutes
- after burn as cooled, cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag
- call 999 if you think it is a serious burn
what do you do if someone is choking?
- encourage them to cough
- if they are still choking, bend them forwards and give up to 5 back blows and try to dislodge the blocakge
- if they are still choking, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts
- call 999, and repeat all the steps untill they breathe again or help arrives
what to do if someone has low blood sugar or a diabetic emergency?
- help them to rest and give them something sugary to eat or a non-diet drink
- reassure them, if they respond well give them more sugary food
- if the person does not improve, call 999 and check for other reasons they may be unwell
what to do in the event of febrile seizure?
make them safe, DO NOT restrain them.
2. remove any blankets and take off outer clothing to help cool them
3. when seizure is over help them to rest on their side with their head tilted back
as always call 999 for any emergency help
