First Aid Flashcards
What precautions do we make when storing oxygen equipment
No smoking or naked flame near cylinders Protect form extremes of heat Keep free from grease and oils Handle with care Do not crack open valve (open briefly)
6 main components of Resuscitator pack
Oxygen cylinder Pressure reducer Demand valve (bag refill valve) Soft resus bag Suction Ancillary equipment (bandages, scissors, soft neck collar)
Oxygen cylinder description and charging pressure
All white with letter ‘N’ on the collar. Sometime have latter ‘N’ or half white half black. Twin pin indexed, so only oxygen cylinder attachments can be used.
Has 2L water capacity. Max bar of 150, must replace when below 100. Air capacity of 300L.
Daily testing procedure of resus bag
Check bag and zips are in good condition
Attach pressure reducer
Open (all the way 1/4 turn back) and ensure pressure of at least 100 bar
Open and check oxygen therapy control valve
Connect demand valve and resus bag and squeeze to ensure correct refill
Check the suction device
Close cylinder
Release pressure
Check all inventory
B.A section inspect and test every 6 months ensure in date
Describe oxygen therapy
Is the supply of increased concentrations of oxygen to a patient who is breathing spontaneously. Can be administered in concentration from 40% to 100% depending on delivery method. A continuous flow will be used with the hudson mask.
Indications to supply oxygen therapy
A patient who is breathing spontaneously and: Is or had been unconscious Level of consciousness alters Is shocked or in danger of shock Complains of chest pain Had lost blood Has required respiratory resuscitation Had required cpr Is short of breath Has suffered from smoke of fume inhalation Appears ill or unwell
3 main functions of of oxygen supply
Resuscitation (used on unconscious patient with cpr to keep oxygen flowing through body to prolong life, used at a rate of 15l/m) Oxygen therapy (maintain high level of oxygen to help with recovery, used at rate of 8l/m)) Suction (to remove contaminants or fluid blocking the throat, fills collection container)
How to assemble oxygen cylinder
Attach pressure reducer
Attach demand valve
Attach soft resus bag and correct size mask
How to use oxygen on non-breathing casualty
When decided to use oxygen
Set up oxygen cylinder attach bag and mask
Ensure clear airway
Lay casualty on back
Insert oropharyngeal airway (if appropriate)
Position yourself and provide adequate head tilt
Ensure mask in sealed fully
Squeeze bag firmly but gently, until visible chest rise
Allow casualty to exhale
Constantly reassess airway
What does an Automatic External Defibrillator do
Analyses casualty’s heart rhythm and decides weather it needs a shock. If so adjusts to correct shock for casualty. The administers shock to try regain regular heart rhythm.
Steps for using AED
Follow DRSABCD and establish casualty is unconscious and not breathing normally.
Turn on AED and follow instructions. It will instruct on:
Plug in leads.
Place electrodes (to bare dry skin).
Clear.
Analyse
Shock
What is a KED
An emergency patient handling device to immobilize when suspected spinal/cervical injury is present.
X-Ray translucent.
Weight limit of 227kgs.
Minimum 2 operators.
What is DRSABCD
Danger Response Send for Help Airways Breathing CPR Defibrillator
When administering emergency care what 3 things must be maintained
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
