First 3 Weeks Flashcards
Cell
Lowest level of biological organization that is capable of performing all of the activities of life
Unicellular/Multicellular organisms
Uni: one celled organism
Multi: made of many cells
Who made the Cell Theory?
Schleiden and Schwann
Cell Theory
-all organisms are made of cells
-all cells come from preexisting cells
Cell Structure (familiarize)
-all cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane (lipid bilayer)
-all cells contain DNA at some point
-some have organelles
-perform specific functions
-some have cell walls
Protoplasm
All the living material in cells
Cytoplasm
Contents of the cell between the plasma membrane and the nucleus
Cytosol
The semi-fluid portion of the cytoplasm
Prokaryotic cells
No nucleus. Usually no other membrane bounded organelles either
Eukaryotic cells
Contain a nucleus. Usually contain other membrane bounded organelles either
Eu=true karyot ≈ pertaining to nucleus
Reductionism
Reduction of complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study
Systems biology
construct models for the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems
What is a system? (familiarize)
A combination of components that function together
Scientific Method
The scientific method is a process used to answer questions or address hypothesis. It requires evidence to logically solve problems. There is no one set procedure. It is more like a set of guidelines.
Inductive reasoning
From specific to general, using specific observations to make a general conclusion
Deductive reasoning
From specific to general, using specific observations to make a general conclusion
Discovery science
Describes nature through observations and analysis of data
Hypothesis based science
Tests a hypothesis, tries to explain nature
Null hypothesis
A hypothesis that is notified, there is no effect, difference, or correlation
Alternative hypothesis
There is an affect difference, or correlation
Correlative study
A correlative study is a procedure used to test a hypothesis through additional observation of this. Without manipulating an independent variable, it exploits pre-existing variation.
