1st amendment
freedom of Religion, Assembly, Petition, Press, and Speech
Freedom of assembly
peacefully gather; time, place, and manner can be regulated, but not the content
Freedom of press
allows public to be INFORMED of issues (through magazines, newspapers, etc)
Freedom of petition
people can ask or REQUEST the government to solve problems
Freedom of speech
pure- face to face
speech plus- banners, slogans
symbolic- actions, objects
5th amendment
-Grand Jury for felony cases- determines whether a trial is to be heard
-Prevents double jeopardy
-Protects against self-incrimination
-Eminent domain-can take land for public benefit as long as just compensation is paid
6th amendment
Rights of the accused:
-Speedy, public trial
-Right to know charges against accused
-impartial jury (prevents bias)
-Confront witnesses; have witnesses in defense of accused
-right to an attorney
