why did US start to look overseas for territory in late 1800s
manifest destiny- that it is americas God given right to have power, competition with European powers
why is having a strong navy important?
prevent invasion from other countries, block enemy ports, protect by water
nationalism
a powerful idea in Europe but caused tension, each nation viewed others as competitors, identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.
imperalism
convinced powers to build empires, a political strategy or practice where a country extends its power and control over other countries, often through territorial acquisition
social darwinism
idea that other races/nationalities had to be slaved/were dumb because of their genetics, or that they did not evolve in the same way/fast enough.
yellow journalism
a style of newspaper reporting that uses sensationalism and exaggeration to increase sales. make other countires look like the issue, and spread propoganda.

battleship that was sent to Havana, Cuba in 1898 to protect U.S. interests during a period of civil unrest and insurrection. ship was exploded in 1898 and cause was unknown. big factor in spainish-american war

the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.
