Grips and pulls the shell from the chamber.
extractor
Used to support the rifle with the support hand; acts as a heat shield from the barrel.
forestock/hand guard
A button assuring that the bolt is locked.
forward assist
Contains the magazine release, magazine well, trigger housing, and trigger components
lower receiver group
Contains ammunition ready to be chambered.
magazine
Permits removal of the magazine from the firearm.
magazine release
Housing for the magazine (internal)
magazine well
Attachment to the barrel’s forward end that reduces the flash as burning powder escapes when the bullet exits the barrel.
muzzle flash suppressor
Blocks the hammer from striking the firing pin; prevents firing (located on the left side of the weapon).
safety
Used to align the firearm to the bullet’s point of impact.
sights (front and rear)
Metal loops affixed to the rifle/carbine to which a carrying strap attaches.
sling swivels
Part that enables shoulder support during firing.
stock
Enables separation of the upper receiver from the lower receiver and allows fieldstripping and cleaning.
take down pins
Enables the firearm to be fired when pulled.
trigger
Section consisting of the trigger, trigger springs, safety, and all firing mechanism parts.
trigger group
Part of the frame that protects the trigger.
trigger guard
Houses the bolt assembly group.
upper receiver group
Seating a loaded magazine into the magazine well.
loading
Moving the round from the magazine to the chamber by releasing the bolt, picking up the round from the magazine and seating the round into the chamber.
feeding/chambering
The face of the bolt locks with the breech end of the barrel.
locking
Ignition of the primer and firing the cartridge.
firing
Unseating the bolt from the breech end of the barrel.
unlocking
Pulling the spent cartridge case from the chamber.
extracting
Pushing the spent cartridge case out of the ejection port.
ejecting
Returning the firing mechanism to the fire position.
