Define ‘firearm’
Anything from which any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile can be discharged by force of explosive and includes:
- anything adapted
- anything that by its completion or replacement of components or correction/repair of defects, would make it a firearm
- anything for the time being is dismantled
- any especially dangerous AIR GUN
What are examples of a prohibited firearm?
- semi-automatic firearm (except a pistol) unless it’s only able to fire 0.22 calibre cartridges OR a semi-auto shotgun with non-detachable magazine holding no more than 5 cartridges
- pump-action shotgun that can be used with a detachable magazine
- pump-action shotgun with non-detachable mag that can hold 5+ cartridges
- any other firearm declared prohibited by Order in Council
Semi-auto centrefire all prohibited
Pump action centre fire good up to 10 rounds - no detachable mag
Shotgun - semi or pump okay up to 5 rounds - no detachable mags
.22 rimfire semiauto is good up to 10 rounds
What is a “prohibited magazine” in relation to a shotgun?
A magazine, detachable or not, able to hold more than 5 cartridges proportionate to the shotgun’s chamber size
What is a “prohibited magazine” in relation to a firearm other than a shotgun (except pistols)
Any detachable magazine capable of holding 0.22 calibre or lower and is able to hold more than 10 of the cartridges,
OR
Any detachable magazine capable of holding more than 10 cartridges and being used with a semi-auto or fully auto firearm.
It also means any other magazine, whether or not detachable, that is capable of holding more than 10 cartridges.
Define an “air gun”.
Any weapon from which, by use of compressed gas or compressed air, not by force of explosive, can discharge a projectile.
Includes: air rifle, air pistol.
What is a “prohibited part”?
- A part of a prohibited firearm
- A component that can be applied to enable or help enable a firearm to be fired with or near to, semi-auto action.
What is an imitation firearm?
Anything resembling a firearm, whether or not it’s capable of firing a shot.
Definition of a “pistol”?
Any firearm DESIGNED or ADAPTED to be held and fired with one hand.
Includes any firearm that is less than 762mm in length.
What is the maximum length of a firearm before it’s not considered a pistol?
762 mm
Examples of restricted weapons?
Anything declared restricted by the Governor-General.
Molotov cocktails, grenades, rocket launchers.
What is an “explosive”?
A substance capable of exploding or producing a pyrotechnic effect.
Dynamite, TNT, marine distress flare.
Definition of “semi-automatic”?
Means that a for a loaded firearm, with each pull of the trigger,
(1) it fires a cartridge and ejects its case AND
(2) chambers another cartridge (unless all cartridges loaded have been fired)
Define a “safe direction”.
If an unintentional discharge occurs, only minor property damage and NO human injury will result.
What are the 4 cardinal rules of firearms safety?
- Treat all firearms as if they’re loaded
- Point the muzzle in a safe direction
- Keep finger outside the trigger guard until you are on target and have decided to fire
- Be sure of your target and what is around it and behind it
What is the renewal time period for a firearms license?
Every 10 years, unless revoked, surrendered, or previously not held a license. In these cases it must be renewed every 5 years.
