1968 Firearms act
Section 1 = firearms
Section 2 = shotguns
Section 5 = prohibited
Air weapons do not come under the act
Conditions to firearm ownership
Must have good reason to own one - Member of a club, sporting pursuits etc
Must have good mental and physical health
Should be stored in a secure gun cabinet with ammunition stored in a separate locked area
Anyone sentenced to prison cannot use them
3 months to 3 years imprisonment leads to a 5 year ban
Ammunition
Ammunition for any firearm and includes, grenades, bombs and other like missiles whether capable of use with a firearm or not. Also includes prohibited ammunition
Section
Must have a certificate to carry the firearms of ammunition
This applies to any firearm except a shot gun or an airweapon.
Applies to all ammunition except :
Cartridges containing 5 or more shot, none of which exceed 0.36 inches in diameter
-Ammunitiotn for an air gun, air rifle or air pistol
Blank cartridges not more than one inch in diameter
Covered guns in section 1
Mostly bolt-action rifles:
- Any other single shot mechanisms
-The barrel is longer than 30cm
- Overall length of the firearm is no longer than 60cm
- Muzzle loaded guns do not adhere to the above size rules
Also includes:
0.22” calibre rim-fire rifles- semi-automatic and pump action are permitted with no magazine limit
- Smooth bore revolver guns chambered for 9mm rim-fire or is designed to be muzzle-loaded
All detachable, foldable stuff is disregarded in length calcs
Section 2 Shotguns
Smooth-bore gun which has:
barrel not less than 24 inches in length and has no barrel with a bore exceeding 2 inches in diameter
Either has no magazine of has non-detachable magazine incapable of holding more than two cartridges
Not a revolver gun
