Q

What is broach rifling?

A

Steal rod with several cutting rings placed down the rod. Each successive ring is larger in diameter

This is forced down the barrel and twisted

Q

What is hammer forged rifling?

A

Hardened steel block is formed to lands and grooves and placed down a blank barrel

The barrel is machine hammered to form a mould of the steel inside, which is then removed.

Q

What is polygonal rifling? Why Is it hard to examine?

A

No distinct transition between lands and grooves so takes the shape referred to as hills and valleys. The gradual transition makes it harder for examiners to measure lands/ grooves

Q

What happens if the twist rate is too low?

A

Barrel wear
High velocity bullets can be torn apart by centrifugal force
Inconsistency in bullets could be magnified decreasing accurac

Q

What is a permanent cavity?

A

Volume of space previously occupied by tissue which has been destroyed by a projectile

16
Q

What is a temporary cavity?

A

Expansion of the permanent cavity by stretching due to transfer of kinetic energy

17
Q

What is fragmentation?

A

Projectile pieces are impelled out from the permanent cavity

18
Q

What three factors allow projectile penetration?

A

Bully construction

Bullet shape and impact velocity
