Fire Science Flashcards
What is pyrolysis
The thermal decomposition of a substance by heat
What is a passive agent
A passive is something that absorbs hear from fire
What are the 2 limits of flammability
LEL:
The lower limit is defined as the lowest concentration of
fuel that will just support a self propagating flame
UEL:
The upper limit is defined as the highest concentration
of fuel that will just support a self propagating flame
What is the ideal mixture
where the amount of gas is exactly right in relation to the amount of
oxygen in the air for combustion to occur with maximum force,
Factors affecting fire development
Position of fire - (middle 4, wall 2, corner 1)
Ceiling height
Smoke layer (neutral plane) - under and over pressure
Ventilation.
Phases of a fire
Early Growth Flash over Fully developed Decaying
Technique and purpose for direct cooling
Technique
The branch is open, a narrow jet aimed directly
at the seat of the fire.
Purpose
May be applied in the early and later stages of a
fire. Used directly on the seat of the fire.
Types of extinguishing methods
Direct
Indirect
Gas cooling
Describe the effective use of water
Small droplet size so give the maximum surface area to cool gases
Types of gas cooling methods
Short pulse
Long pulse
Coning down
