Fire Retardant Materials and Practices Flashcards
The national building code identifies when a firewall or fire separation is required and the fire resistant rating the assembly is required to have. What is this based on?
Intended occupancy
Type of construction
Building size and height.
Active suppression systems used and fire department access
Which part of the NBC do designers use to govern building size and required access
Part 3
If a large building is planned, but its size is limited because of firefighting access, what can be done to allow the building to be built as planned.
Increase fire resistance rating of floor and ceiling to allow building size to be increased
If a larger building is required you can install an active suppression system
Example of Heat transfer by conduction in a building?
When a steal beam penetrating a fire separation is heated it can transmit enough heat to ignite materials on the other side.
Describe the danger of convection to a building occupants?
Moves smoke and heat through the building making escape a lot tougher
What is a Fire Compartment
Area a fire is contained or the area occupants can go in order to be safe from the fire
A construction assembly that acts as a barrier against the spread of a fire usually has a fire resistance rating
Fire separation
How is fire resistance rating calculated for exterior walls
Calculated from the interior only as the protection is for the adjacent building
Can a firewall be constructed of gypsum board?
No must be masonry material
Describe wired glass used as a fire separation
Keeps the glass in place during a fire
If a hole has been drilled for a pipe to pass through fire separation what is important to check during pipe installation
Annular space around the pipe to ensure enough space or not to much space has been provided
How are materials tested for flame spread
Most common method is a Steiner tunnel test.
Time it takes for a flame to travel the length of the material is measured and given a rating
What flame spread rating does untreated wood have?
Rating of 150 by the NBC
3 ways of applying fire retardant chemicals to improve the fire rating and material?
During manufacturing (Mixed with adhesive)
In a pressure Cylinder after manufacture
Applied as surface coatings
What is done to a fire retardant wood after is is treated in a pressure cylinder
Dried to a moisture content of 19% or less.
