Fire or smoke Flashcards
Fires have 3 components required to be sustained
Oxygen, fuel, heat
4 causes of fire in aircraft
Engine start
Inflight
Electrical
Post-crash
3 memory items incase of fire
- Extinguish
- Get on the ground
- Minimise damage to other components
What can cause carboretor fire?
Over priming the engine can cause excess fuel to enter the air intake and ignite.
If carburteor fire, what should you do
Continue cranking the engine (drawing the excess fuel), mixture idle cutoff, throttle open, fuel pump off, fuel selector off

Oil fire
Black flames indicate
Oil firef
Orange flames indicate
Fuel fire
Two techniques for engine fire descent
- High speed descent (the high airflow might extinguish the fire)
- Low speed rapid descent with a lot of drag from landing gear and flaps
Fire classes A B. C D
A - solids
B - Flammable liquids
C - Electrical
D - Metals
What can be used to put out class B fire
Foam or Halon. NOT WATER
Electrical fire exingusihing
Halon. NOT WATER
Halon another name
BCF
Most common extinguiser in aircraft
Halon
Most toxic gases within smoke for aircraft are
Carbon monoxide
Hydrogen Cyanide
