A substance (either matter–solid, liquid or gas–or energy) that, when released its capable of harming people, the environment, and property. It includes weapons of mass destruction (WMD) as defined in 18 U.S. Code, Section 2332a, as well as any other criminal use of hazardous materials, such as illicit labs, environmental crimes, or industrial sabotage.
Hazardous Material
A written declaration by a fire agency describing the things that it intends to do to protect citizenry or customers
Mission Statement
Attempts by fire and emergency service personnel to coordinate and implement a search for a missing person and then effect a rescue
Search and Rescue
Acts of violence that are arbitrarily committed against lives or property and intended to create fear and anxiety
Terrorism
Of or pertaining to firefighting operations involving fixed or rotary wing aircraft
Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)
A team of firefighters with apparatus assigned to perform a specific function in a designated response area
Company
The delivery of prehospital medical treatment
Emergency Medical Services
An individual trained and certified to provide basic life support emergency medical care
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
The unit designation of a group of firefighters assigned to a piece of apparatus designed to deliver water to the fire scene
Engine Company
A fire survival program to encourage people to practice fire drills from their home or residence
Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH)
An individual trained to meet the requirements of CFR OSHA 1910.120, Technician Level for Hazardous Materials Response
Hazardous Materials Technician
Prearranged written agreements of the type and amount of assistance one jurisdiction will provide to another in the event of a large-scale fire or disaster. The key to understanding mutual aid is that it is a reciprocal agreement.
Mutual Aid or Assistance Agreements
A not-for-profit membership organization that uses a consensus process to develop model fire prevention codes and firefighting training standards.
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, a national consensus training standard establishing the job performance requirements of tasks to be performed by firefighters
NFPA 1001
An individual trained and certified to provide advanced life support emergency medical care, including drug therapy.
Paramedic (EMT-P)
A combination fire service apparatus with components of both an engine company and a truck company

The unit designation of a group of firefighters assigned to perform specialized rescue work and/or tactics and functions such as forcible entry, search and rescue, ventilation, and so on.
