Fire Hose (CH. 13) Flashcards
Size of hose refers to what dimintion
Inside diameter
Intake hose (2 types)
connect pumper to a water source
- soft: for a pressurized source
- hard: for a static source (drafting)
Types of damage to a hose
mechanical
thermal
organic
chemical
Material of couplings
mostly- brass aluminum or magnesium
Types of couplings
Threaded-
male- exposed threads
female- protected threads w/ swivel
Nonthreaded- sexless or Storz
Higbee Cut
mark on the lugs of the coupling that aligns threads to prevent cross threading
Simple rules for the care of Couplings
dont drop/drag
dont let vehicles run over
inspect, wash, and dry
inspect gasket
Types of Hose Valves
Ball- pumper discharge, gated wyes
Gate- hydrant
Butterfly- large pump intake
Clapper- Siamese
Wye vs Siamese
wye- splits a hose (1 female into 2 males)
Siamese- combines hose ( 2 female into 1 male)
Water thief
used in wildland house, similar to the wye
Hydrant valve
valve the connects to hydrant used to change size, split or boost hydrant
Hose Fittings
Connects hose that can not normally.
Adapter- male to male, female to female
Reducer- larger hose the smaller hose
Elbows- usually on the intake on engine, makes it easier to connect
hose roller
reduces friction on hose on windowsills and roofs
hose Jacket
metal jacket that clamps on damaged hose to temporarily fixes it.
Hose clamp- uses
used to stop water flow to replace a burst section, allow extention, easier to advance hose up stairwell open a hydrant to free up a FF
Hose Clamps- types
screw down
press down
hydraulic
can do manually
Hose clamp guidelines
20' behind apparatus 5' behind the coupling (source side) close evenly close/open slowly (avoid water hammer) stand to the side (may snap open)
spanners
used to loosen couplings (fit on the lugs)
usually hand tighten couplings
hose bridge or ramp
used so hose dose not get run over.
chaffing blocks
put under hose to prevent vibration damage
Hose strap, rope or chain
used to help hold/control hose
can be used to secure hose to ladder
straight roll
male (exposed threads) on the inside
have control on female end when rolled out
opposite if damaged
donut roll
fold hose in half (on top of each other)and roll
male on top (will be protected in the end)
have control of both ends when rolled out
twin donut roll
fold hose (side by side) both ends exposed
used for compact storage
can be made self-locking
