A

Fire discipline is the language of fire control. It consists of words, phrases, rules, and conventions, which have specific meanings and result in some definite actions at the guns.

A

The aim of fire discipline is to ensure that, in response to fire orders, appropriate action is taken at the guns, strictly in accordance with the intention of the originator and with minimum delay.

A

During continuous fire, guns are to be loaded and fired continuously at fire for effect. This order is cancelled by three orders;

Stand Easy is used by the CPO to withdraw detachment from a deployed gun. The gun stays ready on position.

A

Stand Fast is only used in connection with local safety, and may be ordered by any rank.

All personnel stand motionless at their positions.

Cancelled only by the order originator with the phrase “Cancel stand fast”.

What happens during “Prepare to Move”?

A

Prepare to move is a warning order for movement, usually coupled with a timing.

On receipt of this order, certain preparations are made, but guns remain in action until cease firing is ordered.

What happens during “Cease Firing”?

A

Cease firing brings the guns out of action definitively. It is never used by the observer.

Cease firing is not ordered until an order to move has been received, and the guns are verified empty.

What happens during “Check Firing”? What cancels it?

A

Check Firing means stop firing immediately. All action on the guns with the exception of firing shall continue in accordance with orders.

Check firing is cancelled by “Cancel Check Firing”.

What happens upon the order “Empty Guns”?

A

Empty Guns is an order used to fire the guns. If a fire mission is in progress, guns will fire at current data. If not, The observer will specify a grid or a target number.

What is a Final Protective Fire (FPF)?

A

Final Protective Fire is an emergency pre-planned fire mission stipulated in exercise or operation SOPs.

What happens upon the order “Cease Loading”?

A

Guns are not to be reloaded. Takes effect immediately. All other action on the guns continues with the exception of loading.

Cancelled by “Cancel cease loading”, or orders for a new fire mission.

What happens when a gun suffers a mechanical failure?

A

Any mechanical failure must be reported to the Battery commander, the OP, and the Regimental Command Post Officer (RCPO). Report will include which gun is out of action, the mechanical issure, and an estimated repair time.

“#2 out of action, sight broken, 15 mikes.”

When gun is repaired, a report informing the fixed status is sent.

“#2 back in action.”

When is a report “Crested” sent to the OPs?

A

When an order cannot be carried out due to a crest. The CPO will report crested and await further orders.

On its own, this order means crested both low and high angle.

When is a Shot Neglect reported?

A

A report sent if a mistake resulted in guns being fired under three conditions;

Wrong ammunition
Wrong data
Wrong time

Another round is fired at the correct data without any order, CPO reports “Ready” if at my command is in effect.

What is included in a report sent during a premature round detonation?

A

A report will be sent including;

Where premature took place
Assessment of damage/injuries
Assessment of the most probable cause

“Premature #2 in bore, #2 destroyed, 2 dead, 3 seriously wounded, cause under investigation”
