Fire Detection/Protection Flashcards
What airplane systems have fire detection and protection?
- engines
- APU
- Cargo compartments
- Lavatories
Are the cockpit and cabin protected from fire?
- Yes
- cockpit: 1 hand-held HALON fire extinguisher
- cabin: 4 hand-held halon fire extinguishers (2 fwd and 2 aft)
How are the engines and APU protected from fire?
- Engines: 2 halon fire bottles
- APU: 1 dedicated halon fire bottle
Can both engine fire bottles be used on the same engine?
Yes
What is the power source engine and APU fire detection and prevention?
- Engine detection: DC ESS
- Engine protection: HOT BATT
- APU detection: DC ESS
- APU protection: DC ESS
Describe the engine and APU fire detection system
- Engine: 2 detector loops per engine
- APU: 2 detector loops
Fire test, how long do you hold the button?
- press and hold the test button for at least 3 seconds, if APU is running then no more than 10 secs or APU will auto shutdown
Fire test, what are the aural warnings?
- fire bell
- triple chime
Fire test, what visual indications should you see on the overhead panel?
Six lights:
- fire handle 1 and 2
- cargo smoke fwd extinguisher button
- cargo smoke aft extinguisher button
- APU extinguisher button
- APU EMER STOP button (top half)
Fire test, what indications should you get on the glareshield?
2 master warning lights
Fire test, what visual indications will you receive on the EICAS?
5 messages, 2 ITT FIRE
- ENG 1 FIRE
- ENG 2 FIRE
- CARGO FWD SMOKE
- CARGO AFT SMOKE
- APU FIRE
What happens when an engine fire handle is pulled?
Closes respective engine:
- Fuel SOV
- Hydraulic SOV
- bleed SOV
What is an indication of an APU fire?
- fire bell
- red stripe in EMER STOP button
- APU FIRE message on EICAS
Will the APU stop automatically if a fire is detected?
Only on the ground
What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is NOT pushed after a fire is detected?
After one minute the APU FIRE EXTG button illuminates
Will the APU fire extinguisher automatically discharge
No
How many smoke detectors are in the cargo compartments?
- 3 in FWD
- 2 in AFT
What happens to the forward compartment in the event smoke is detected?
Why?
- recirc fan shuts off
- ventilation outflow valve closes
- prevents oxygen from entering and halon from escaping into aircraft cabin
How many fire bottles exist for the cargo compartments?
- 2 bottles shared for the two compartments
- one high rate, one low rate
What is the difference between the two cargo fire bottles?
- high rate bottle saturates compartment immediately
- low rate bottle maintains saturation over a period of time
How long will the low rate bottle remain active?
60 minutes
Can one bottle be used for the forward compartment and the other the aft?
No. Only one compartment may be selected, forward or aft
What happens when a cargo extinguisher button is pushed when smoke has been detected?
- high rate bottle discharges immediately
- low rate bottle discharges after one minute if in flight (if weight on wheels, the bottle will not auto discharge)
In flight, can the low rate bottle be discharged immediately?
Yes, push the EXT button a second time (first time discharges the high rate bottle)
How can you discharge the low rate cargo ext bottle on the ground?
Press the EXT button three times
Can cargo extinguishing be used if no smoke is detected?
