Fire Detection/Protection Flashcards
What airplane systems have fire detection and protection?
- Engines
- APU-
- Cargo Compartments
- Lavatories
Are the cockpit and cabin protected from fire?
-Yes
-Cockpit- 1 hand held Halon Fire etinguisher
-Cabin-
2 hand held Halon FE’s (1 fwd& 1 aft)
1 hand held H20/Glycol Extinguisher (aft cabin)
How are the engines and APU protected from fire?
- Engines - 2 Halon Fire Bottles
- APU - 1 Halon fire bottle dedicated to the APU only
Can both engine fire bottles be used for one engine if needed?
Yes
What is the power source for engine and APU fire detection and protection?
- Eng Detection - DC ESS
- Eng Protection - HOT BATT
- APU Det/Protection - DC ESS
Describe the engine and APU fire detection system
- Engine - 8 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops) per engine
- APU - 2 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops)
Describe the Fire Test
Press/hold test button for 3-10 seconds
-Aural Warnings - Fire Bell
Triple Chime
-Visual Indications - Overhead Panel
Fire Handle 1/2

APU ext button
APU EMER STOP(top half button)
- Glare Shield
Master Warning Lights on both sides
-EICAS -ENG 1/2 FIRE (CAS MSG)
CARGO FWD & AFT SMOKE (CAS MSG)
APU FIRE (CAS MSG)
FIRE (Engine 1/2 ITT gauge)
What happens when an engine fire handle is pulled?
Closes respective engine
- Fuel SOV
- Hydraulic SOV
- Bleed Air SOV
What is the indication of an APU fire?
- Fire Bell
- Red Stripe in the EMER STOP button
- APU FIRE is displayed on the EICAS
Will the APU automatically shutdown if a fire is detected?
Only on the ground
What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is pushed after a fire test has been detected?
- APU shuts off immediately without a 1 minute cool down
- APU Fuel SOV closes
- APU Fire EXTG button illuminates
What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is not pushed after a fire has been detected?
After one minute the APU FIRE EXTG button illuminates
Will the APU fire extinguisher automatically discharge?
NO
How many smoke detectors are installed in the cargo compartments?
- 3 in the FWD
- 2 in the AFT
What happens to the FWD cargo compartment in the event smoke is detected? Why?
- Recirc fan shuts off and the Ventilation outflow valve closes
- Prevents oxygen from entering the compartment and prevents Halon agent from escaping into the aircrafts cabin
HOw many extg bottles are installed for the cargo compartments?
- 2 bottles used for both compartments
- 1 high rate and 1 low rate
What is the difference between the high rate and the low rate bottle?
- High rate saturates the compartment immediately
- Low rate maintains saturation over a duration of time
How long will the Low rate bottle remain active in the compartment?
60 minutes
Can one bottle be used for one compartment and the other bottle for the other compartment?
No. Only one compartment maybe be selected (FWD/AFT)
What happens when a cargo extinguishing button is pushed if smoke has been detected?
- High Rate bottle discharges immediately
- Low rate dishcharges after one minute if the airplane is in flight
- If on ground, the Low rate bottle will not discharge
During Flight, can the low rate bottle be discharged before the minute is up?
Yes, by pushing the extinguishing button again
How can the low rate bottle be discharged if the airplane in on the ground (WOW)?
The extinguishing button must be pushed again
Can cargo extinguishing be used if no smoke is detected?
- Yes. The High Rate bottle EXTG button must be pushed twice, once to arm the bottle and once to discharge the bottle
- The Low rate bottle automatically discharges after one minute if in flight
How are the LAVs protected from fire?
Heat sensitive extinguishers in the LAV waste bins automatically discharge if a predetermined temp is detected (78 degrees C)
