To get a fire indication what must system get?
Both loops detect overheat unless one loop is inop
What happens when the fire handle and ITT warning stops illuminating?
This means the fire has been extinguished
What is the 1-2-3 rule?
It’s the cargo compartment protection
How many smoke detectors are required in lavatories?
1 smoke detector in each lavatory; there are 2 lavatories, one forward and one aft.
What is required for lavatory fire protection?
1 fire bottle in each waste container (forward and aft lavatory).
How does the fire bottle in the lavatory operate?
The wax plug melts at a given temperature to discharge the bottle.
What can the gas from the lavatory fire bottle do?
It can fool the sensor into believing the fire is not out.
How do you test the fire detection system?
Press and hold the test button on the overhead for a minimum of 3 seconds, but not more than 10 seconds to prevent APU shutdown.
What are the aural warnings for fire detection?
Fire Bell and Triple Chime.
What is the ‘6-2-7 Rule’ for visual warnings?
- Fire handle 1
- Fire handle 2
- Cargo smoke (FWD) extinguisher button
- Cargo smoke (AFT) extinguisher button
- APU extinguisher button
- APU EMER STOP (top half of button).
What lights are included in the glare shield for fire warnings?
- Master Warning light (left)
- Master Warning light (right).
What are the aural indications for fire detection?
- Fire Bell
- Triple Chime.
What are the EICAS messages for fire detection?
- ENG 1 FIRE (CAS message)
- ENG 2 FIRE (CAS message)
- CARGO FWD SMOKE (CAS message)
- CARGO AFT SMOKE (CAS message)
- APU FIRE (CAS message).
What gauges display fire warnings for the engines?
FIRE (Engine 1 ITT gauge) and FIRE (Engine 2 ITT gauge).
What airplane systems have fire detection and protection?
Engines, APU, Cargo Compartments, Lavatories
Are the cockpit and cabin protected from fire?
Yes
Cockpit: 1 hand-held Halon fire extinguisher; Cabin: 3 hand-held Halon fire extinguishers (1 fwd. & 2 aft); one water extinguisher (aft, aircraft right)
How are the engines and APU protected from fire?
Engines: 2 Halon fire bottles; APU: 1 Halon fire bottle dedicated to the APU only
Can both engine fire bottles be used for one engine if needed?
Yes
What is the power source for engine and APU fire detection and protection?
Engine Detection: DC ESS; Engine Protection: HOT BATT; APU Detection: DC ESS; APU Protection: DC ESS
Describe the engine and APU fire detection system.
Engine: 8 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops) per engine; APU: 2 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops)
How do you describe the fire test?
Press and hold the test button on the overhead panel for a minimum of 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds if the APU is running or it will automatically shut down the APU.
What are the aural warnings during a fire test?
Fire bell and triple chime.
What are the visual indications during a fire test?
Overhead panel, fire handle 1, fire handle 2, cargo smoke (FWD) extinguisher button, cargo smoke (AFT) extinguisher button, APU extinguisher button, APU EMER STOP (top half of button), glare shield, master warning light (left), master warning light (right), EICAS.
What CAS messages indicate a fire?
ENG 1 FIRE, ENG 2 FIRE, CARGO FWD SMOKE, CARGO AFT SMOKE, APU FIRE.
What happens when an engine fire handle is pulled?
Closes respective engine fuel SOV, hydraulic SOV, and bleed SOV.
What is an indication of an APU fire?
Fire bell, red stripe in the EMER STOP button, APU FIRE is displayed on the EICAS.
Will the APU automatically shut down if a fire is detected?
Only on the ground.
What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is pushed after a fire has been detected?
APU shuts off immediately without a 1-minute cool-down, APU fuel SOV closes, APU FIRE EATG button illuminates.
What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is not pushed after a fire has been detected?
After one minute the APU FIRE EXTG button illuminates.
Will the APU fire extinguisher automatically discharge?
No
How many smoke detectors are installed in the cargo compartments?
3 detectors in the FWD compartment
2 detectors in the AFT compartment
What happens to the forward cargo compartment in the event smoke is detected?
Recirculation fan shuts off
Ventilation outflow valve closes
What is the purpose of the actions taken when smoke is detected in the forward cargo compartment?
Prevents oxygen from entering the compartment
Prevents Halon agent from escaping into the aircraft’s cabin
How many extinguishing bottles are installed for the cargo compartments?
2 bottles used for both compartments
1 high-rate bottle and 1 low-rate bottle
What is the difference between the high-rate bottle and the low-rate bottle?

Low-rate bottle discharges after one minute if the airplane is in flight
If airplane is on the ground (weight-on-wheels) the low-rate bottle will NOT automatically discharge
During flight, can the low-rate bottle be discharged before the minute is up?
Yes, by pushing the extinguishing button again
How can the low-rate bottle be discharged if the airplane is on the ground (weight-on-wheels)?
