FINISHES Flashcards
what is a nap?
the raised surface of a pile fabric or brushed fabric
what does texture mean?
what the fabric feels like, is it smooth, bobbly, rough ect
what is raising? (mechanical finish)
fabric is passed through rollers covered with fine flexible wire brushes which lift up the fibres to form a soft surface called a nap
what is calendaring? (mechanical finish)
fabric Is passed through heavy heated rollers under pressure to smooth the surface and adds a sheen
what is embossing? (mechanical finish)
similar to calendaring except the rollers have a raised pattern on them which gets transferred onto the fabric
what is beetling? (mechanical finish)
fabric is passed through revolving wooden hammers that gives fabric a lustrous sheen
what is laser cutting? (mechanical finish)
a clean cut on synthetic materials and seals the edge
what is water repellency? (chemical finish)
Teflon or scotchguard finish applied to repel water
what is laminating? (chemical finish)
combining two or more layers of different materials which are bonded together by glue or heat (interfacing is an example of laminating)
what is meant by stain resistance? (chemical finish)
Teflon or scotchguard treatment to repel stains
what is meant by flame resistance? (chemical finish)
proban which reduces the flammability of fabric, increases stiffness and adds to cost
what is meant by mothproofing? (chemical finish)
mitin chemical applied to make the fibres inedible to moths
