FINISHCognitive Explanations - Differential Association theory Flashcards

1
Q

What is it?

A

-Created by Sutherland
- It doesn’t account for why an individual becomes a criminal but how it happens
-Focuses entirely on nurture, specifically the influence of learning and the people you associate with influence behaviours
- This social approach can be used to explain why criminal behaviours might run in families, not because of inheritance but because of observation and reinforcement
-Individuals learn values, attitudes, techniques and motives for criminal behaviour (hence differential association)
