Fingerprints Flashcards
Can you use one FEN for more than one latent print?
Yes multiple latents can be on the one FEN
What does CARPET stand for?
Composition
Amount
Receiving surface
Position
Environment
Time of contact
What camera settings should you use for a examination photograph of a print ?
ISO 100
Shutter 125 or higher
Aperture f11 or above
What temp should you use for the sluperglue cabinet?
120 degrees for liquid glue
230 degrees for powder
What chemical is used to enhance bloody prints?
Amido Black
What is the optimal humidity setting for superglue fuming ?
80% humidity
What chemical is used to enhance superglue treated prints?
Ardrox
Fluoro magnetic prints should use what lighting to enhance for photography?
An orange filter with 505nm setting
OR
UV with safety glasses
When would you use Ninhydrin over Indanedione?
When the paper is fluorescent or glows.
Can you heat up thermal paper after chemical process?
No it will make it go black
What is the superglue fuming process ?
In a sealed chamber, liquid superglue is heated to create Cyanocrylate fumes.
Water is also heated to increase humidity.
I’m the presence of humidity, cyanocrylate fumes transform into a solid in a process called polymerisation.
Cyanocrylate fumes are attracted to greasy and moist surfaces found on latent fingerprints, and solidifys into a hard, white polymer that can be visible.
What are the four classes of deceased persons?
Fresh
Decomposed
Macerated (wet)
Desiccated (dry)
How do you break rigor?
Manipulate the main joints and than work your way down to the smaller joint. E.g. shoulder down to hand and finger
Reasons for fingerprint ID of deceased?
Establish ID
Body unknown
Unrecognisable
Suspected ID only not confirmed
Foul play
Police investigation (murder)
Disaster victims
Prevent impersonation
Orders from the coroner
Elimination of fingerprints
Other than PPE what else can you find in the lab for WHS?
First aid kit
Duress alarm
Emergency shower
Emergency eyewash
Fire blanket
Fire extinguisher
Can all chemicals be store together?
No some chemicals need to be stored separately and more dangerous chemicals are kept in a lockable cabinet
When taking photographs of print through glass what must you do?
Write Thru glass on the FEN so FPB know that it’s reversed
Can you use fingerprint powders on the deceased at the scene to obtain a fingerprint photograph?
No, it’s not to be done at the scene (only photographs alone) unless coroners permission
What are the minimum details required on a FEN?
Date
Surface/ location
If vehicle- rego or vin or description
Other location- address or surname of complainant/ victim
Property- property tag number or description
Can abbreviation be used on the FEN?
Yes but not on the exhibit FR entry
What are the stages of examination?
- Visual
- Lighting
3.
What is a porous surface?
E.g. fabric, wood, paper.
What chemical examinations can be used on porous surfaces?
Ninhydrin
Indanedione
Physical developer and Oil Red O
What is a non porous surface ?
E.g. glass, plastic, metal.
What type of development would you use on non porous surfaces?
Black, white, fluorescent and magnetic powders.
Wet powder
Small partial reagent
Superglue
Fuming enhancement
Vacuum metal deposition
What do you need to note on the chemical bottles before use?
Batch number
Prep date
Expiry date
Who prepared it
If it’s been batch tested
Check it’s working not stock solution
