fingerprint Flashcards
What is Anthropometry?
The Measurement of human bones to fin their identity.
Which case made Anthropometry no longer an effective means of identification?
The Will West and William West case two brothers with the exact same bones.
who invented Anthropometry?
Alphonse Bertillon
How are linked fingerprints taken? Direction?
thumb goes towards person other fingers are taken away from the person.
What are major case impressions?
Wrist Bracelet to the tip of you finger.
Name the fingers of the hand in fingerprint terminology?
Thumb , index, middle, ring, little finger.
What is the anatomical basis for loop classification?
Radius and Ulna.
What is Sir Edward Richard Henry Known for?
Henry classification system.
Who was the Anthropologist that identified characteristics by which fingerprints can be identified?
Francis Galton
What does typelines mean?
Two innermost ridges which start or go parallel, surround or tend to surround the pattern area.
What does cores mean?
the approximate center of the pattern. Could be the innermost look farthest from the delta or if the curve is spoiled and has a rod it is the spike of the rod.
What does deltas mean?
The delta is that point on a ridge at or nearest to the point of divergence of two tapelines and located at or directly in front of the point of divergence.
What does bifurcation mean?
Is the forking or dividing of one line into two or more lines.
What does divergence mean?
Divergence is a spreading apart of two lines which have been running parallel or nearly parallel.
Do state and local law enforcement agencies have their own database of fingerprints and palm prints or do they rely on the FBI?
State and local enforcement agencies have there own databases and will look into FBI if they couldn’t find their prints or if the crime is really big.
What does the pattern area of loops and whorls contain?
Core, delta, and recurving edge
When counting ridges and you cross a bifurcation, how many ridges are assigned?
You count it as two different lines or more.
When assigning a letter A,T, or R to a fingerprint, which fingers require a capital letter? Lower case letter?
Capital letters on for 2 and 7 (index fingers) lower case letters for all other fingers.
What are the four the 4-sub types of whorls?
Plain, Central Pocket, Double, Accidental.
What are the essentials of a loop?
Sufficient recurve, delta, Ridge count
What are the general percentages of loop, arches, and whorls?
Loops: 65%
Whorls: 30%
Arches: 5%
What is AFIS?
Automated Fingerprinting Identification System.
Does AFIS make the identifications or does the examiner make those conclusions?
The examiner makes the final conclusion not the AFIS.
Do you need an entire palm and fingerprint to get the identification?
No you do not
Is the science of fingerprints infallible?
No it is not
What is the premise of fingerprinting identification?
They are permanent and unique.
What are the two main layers of skin?
Epidermis, and dermis
When are friction ridges formed in utero in weeks and months?
Weeks: 10-17
Months: 3-4
around
what is the most abundant substance in sweat and what is its approximate percentage?
99% water
1% NaCl, amino acids, and natural and unnatural whatever its called.
Do fingerprints change as a persons hand grows?
no they do not
Which gland secrets moisture and oil from hairy portions of the skin?
Sebaceous glands
