A

Patient sitting at end of table parallel to end so legs
not under the table
• Flex elbow at 90o
• Hand and forearm resting on table
• Place palm of hand down on imaging plate and
slightly spread the fingers
• Long axis of digit should be parallel to edge of
imaging plate
• Central ray perpendicular to imaging plate
• Center to the PIP joint
• Collimate on four sides to outer margins of digit
• FFD 110cm
• kVp 42
• mAs 2
• Fine focus, no grid

Patient sitting at end of table parallel to end so
legs not under the table
• Flex elbow at 90o
• Hand and forearm resting on table
• From PA position rotate hand and wrist 45o
so
radial aspect is elevated
• Long axis of digit should be parallel to edge of
imaging plate
• Central ray perpendicular to imaging plate
• Center to the PIP joint
• Collimate on four sides to outer margins of digit

Lateral Finger

A

Patient sitting at end of table parallel to end so legs
not under the table
• Flex elbow at 90o
• Hand and forearm resting on table
• Hand on side
– 2
nd and 3rd fingers radial aspect is placed in contact
with the imaging plate
– 4
th and 5th fingers ulna aspect is placed in contact with
the imaging plate
• Fold the other digits into a fist
• Long axis of digit should be parallel to edge of
imaging plate
• Central ray perpendicular to imaging plate
• Center to the PIP joint
• Collimate on four sides to outer margins of digit
• FFD 110cm
• kVp 42

Q

Lateral Finger criteria

A
Regional anatomy included – tip of
digit to distal metacarpal, including
soft tissue
• Metacarpophalangeal and
interphalangeal joints open
• True lateral position – concave
appearance of anterior surface of shaft
of phalanges
• Least possible overlap of other digits
• Digit free of motion
• Density and contrast optimal to
visualise bone & soft tissue
