What fine and gross movements do you have at birth?
- babies are born with a range of survival reflexes eg: palmar reflex where they grasp anything that touches their palm
- reflexes are not conscious movements
- over time many reflexes are lost and replaced by controlled movements

Fine = clasps and unclasps hands
Gross = moves head to watch things

- can stand on one foot and hop easily
- can skip and move rhythmically to music
- can hop on each foot
- can catch, throw and kick well
- can walk backwards quickly

Fine =
- increased skill and accuracy across all fine motor skills
- drawing increasingly detailed and skilled
- handwriting may be joined up
Gross =
- increased coordination allowing for skill in sports (swimming, gymnastics, football)

- puberty may temporarily affect fluency of movements after a growth spurt - changes in body shapes may affect spatial awareness
- during adolescence some young people may become short sighted this may affect their ability to see - which may in turn affect their movements
During puberty the heart and lungs grow and there is potential for increased stamina - changes during puberty also increase overall strength - especially in boys whose muscles increase
