Kohlbergs data comprised the answers his participants gave to the questions in his hypothetical moral dilemmas. He argued that he answers he got constituted 6 different types.
Stage 1
Obedience or punishment orientation
‘Stealing is wrong, god said so, might get told off’
Stage 2
Self-interest
‘Yes, he needs his wife’
‘No, might go to jail’
Stage 3
Social conformity orientation
‘Yes, be a good husband’
‘No, bad role model’
Stage 4
Law and order orientation
‘No, we need laws in society’
‘Yes, duty to wife’
Stage 5
Social contract orientation
‘Yes values morals, life more important than money, laws should be changed’
Stage 6
Universal ethics orientation
‘Discuss all possible views’
Kohlberg said only 10 reached this level

Level 1- pre-conventional morality
Level 2 - conventional morality
Level 3- post-conventional morality
