Final zinc oxide eugenol cement Flashcards
type 1
temporary cementation
type 2
permanent cementation of restoration fabricated outside the mouth
type 3
temporary restorative material or a base
type 4
cavity liner
ZOE stands for?
zinc oxide eugenol
ZOE is limited as a cement why? used as?
low strength and high solubility
*it is kind to pulp and has been used as temporary restorative material, endodontic sealer and surgical dressing
olive oil in ZOE is used to?
modify the eugenol’s viscosity and taste
why does ZOE have high solubility?
it is readily hydrolyzed to form free eugenol and sinc hydroxide
advantages and disadvantages
advantages= good with pulp (obtundent and neutral pH), good margin seal disadvantages= high solubility and low compressive strength (even lower in modified formulations)
what is nesicary for setting reaction to proceed with ZOE?
some water
major component of powder? liquid?
powder= zinc oxide liquid= eugenol (clove oil)
what modifications have been made to increase strength?
1) add polymethyl methacrylate polymer OR
2) Al2O3 to powder and ethoxybenzoic acid to liquid
