Infant-directed speech
A speech register that has high pitch, simpler vocabulary
Phonetic Discrimination
Ability to distinguish between acoustically similar sounds that distinguish meaning in the language - e.g. differentiating between vowel length, lexical tones
Categorical in adults - Identification, if you cannot label them as different you are not differentiating them
Critical/Sensitive Periods
Critical - A limited time frame where certain developments can occur
Sensitive - Window of time where development is more easily achieved
McGurk Effect
Auditory visual illusion that illustrates how perceivers merge information for speech sounds across the senses (e.g. hearing va when you see someone say va even though the audio says ba)
Phenomenon that results in a difference in audio perception when looking at someone speak vs not looking
