Ethnic Studies
The study of intersectionality, interconnectedness, its relevance to the modern day, and the connections of the effects of the system on our world today
Race
The categories or gorups people are put into based off of skin color, a social construct, also based on other physical traits
Ethnicity
relating and reffering to place of origin, historical origin, and ancestry
Culture
The tradtions, celebrations and practices of a group, often relating to ethnicity
Racism
discrimination based on appearance, systemic or direct
Bias
a sway to one side, a preference that can often be harmful
Microagression
the everyday slights, insults, putdowns, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that people experience in daily interactions with people who may be unaware that what they are saying can be harmful.
Stereotypes
Assumptions and categorizations about a group that are often harmful and based on outdated beliefs
Counter narrative
The direct opposition and “counter” to the dominant narrative, the side of the story that isn’t often told
Etymology
The study of the origin of words and how their meanings have changed throughout history (slurs in this context)
Individualism
A culture or society that values self-achievement, self-reliance, independence and personal resilience
Collectivism
Giving the group priority over the individuals residing within it, prioritizing the well-being f the group over the well-being of individuals therefore benefiting the whole
Epistemology
why do people believe the things they do, where are these beliefs and ideas coming from (white supremacy ideas, dominant narratives?) (systemic roots, origin of the word use)
Social construct
An idea or action that is implemented in a society but was created and accepted by the people, often relating to heteronormativity and old, outdated beliefs that carry over today
Systemic racism
the racism that comes taught and implemented through the “system” (e.g.: schools, career training, religious teachings, parental teachings)
