What are some general resume tips?
- No first person (I, me, my)
- When listing dates include months for time periods less than one year in duration
- When listing companies and schools include city and province
- If 2 pages, name and phone number must appear at the top of page 2
What are some tips for the contact information in the resume?
- Consider different fonts and choose one carefully
- Make sure your name is bolded and in a larger font
- Include: name, address, email, phone
- Avoid using humorous Hotmail or Gmail addresses
- Repeat your name, phone and email at the top of page 2 (you don’t need to repeat the address portion)
What are some tips for the objective in a resume?
- Clearly establish yourself as an BECL student seeking an BECL oriented position
- Use the word “leadership”
- Seeking Co-op Placement
- Express desire to make a contribution / add value
- Be careful not to limit the scope of your objective
- Consider modifying to target specific employers
- Options: apply skills and experience, continue learning in a work environment
What are some tips for the skills section in a resume?
- Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE)
- Number of years experience working with children
- First Aid /CPR training
- High/Scope Certified
- Current criminal reference check
- Languages
- Music
- Computer skills
What are some tips for the education section in a resume?
- This section should be prominently featured on your resume (page one)
- Include dates
- Make sure you make it clear you are currently in the BECL program and working toward your graduation
- Your Sheridan BECL program should be listed first, followed by your other programs
- Take the opportunity to position your BECL program for a potential employer
- If you have a strong GPA or other academic achievements, consider including details
- High School details are less important (optional)
- Practicum or academic projects details could be included in this section or alternatively in your work section
What are some tips for the experience section in a resume?
- Multiple categories can be used, for example: related work experience, other work experience, volunteer experience
- Use different categories to place related work experience higher on your resume (i.e. your work in a related childhood education role should take priority over a more recent job in a restaurant etc.)
- Follow the formatting style you used for the Education section
- Look for ways to reinforce leadership attributes
- Use strong action verbs
- Unless you are still in the job, you should use past tense verbs
- Highlight results and accomplishments

What are some tips for the interests section of a resume?
- Highlights potential hidden skills
- Re-enforce the passion for your area of study
- Allow the employer to get to know you better
What are the common interests that are usually stated in a resume?
- Volunteer

- Reading (children’s literature, professional development etc.)
- Writing (skits for children, newsletters, etc.)
- Sports (emphasize team work, training, dedication)
- Sport enthusiast (you don’t have to play a sport to be an enthusiast)

- Computers and Technology

What is the purpose of a cover letter?
- Introduces you to the employer
- Call attention to elements of your background
- Reflect your attitude, personality, motivation, enthusiasm, and communication skills
- Refer to any information specifically requested in a job advertisement
- Generate employer interest in meeting you personally
What are some guidelines of a cover letter?
- Should be short - no longer than one page
- Three Paragraphs (Recommended)
- Always customize the letter to the specific company and job
- Whenever possible, make sure it is addressed to a specific person
- Refer to your qualifications, experience and skills that relate to the job posting
- Show that you know something about the company
- Express your enthusiasm and interest in the position and the company
- Use first person, but avoid too much “I”
- Stay positive! Don’t tell them what you can’t do

Paragraph 1 of 3 in your cover letter should include:
- Introduce yourself. What program you are in
- Name the job you are applying to
- Demonstrate knowledge of company
- Sentence summing up qualifications (optional)
Paragraph 2 of 3 in your cover letter should include:
- How does your past education/experience fit with what the employer needs? (Sell your strengths)
- Use examples from school or work experience to support your point
- Include accomplishments
- Use the employer’s words whenever possible (draw from job description)
- Focus: “What you can do for them”
