Seven Year War

  • 1756 to 1763
  • First global war
  • Started because both the French and British claimed Ohio Valley
  • Early in the war, the French (aided by Canadian militia and Aboriginal allies) defeated several British attacks and captured a number of British forts.
  • The victory gave Canada to Britain

  • Treaty of Ghent ‘ended’ the war
  • Loyalists: People who still liked British empire after American Revolution
  • Upper and Lower Canada were divided in who wanted to to participate in the war
  • An end to the Napoleonic Wars from 1793 to 1815

Women’s Voluntary Services

  • Unpaid labor and volunteering contributed majorly to the war
  • After women already had been running the organization, Ottawa gave it a name
  • 2 provinces created daycare systems to help
  • 50k women served in non-combative positions
  • As the war was winding down, government started shuffling women back into the home

Barnardo Children

  • Very little protection for workers
  • Between 1869 and 1940s, 100k British Children were sent to Canada
  • Bernardo originally wanted to set up a trade school for orphaned children.
  • Many children were mistreated once in Canada
