Comic Opera (intermezzo)
Short version of opera seria with a syllabic singing style. Comic opera is performed in between the acts of an opera seria. Has dell’arte “stock” characters.
Galant Style
(ga-LANT style) “Easily digested.” Graceful melody with simple accompaniment.
Exposition
“A” section of Sonata Form
AB form with a transition in the middle.
A: Theme 1. Tonic (I, or i in minor) at home packing. Tends to be grander.
B: Dominant (V, or III in minor) the home away from home. Tends to be more lyrical.
Development
Moves through multiple keys, returning to the Dominant (V) at the end. “Sight-Singing Vacation”
Recapitulation
“A’” section of Sonata Form
AB form (Theme 1 and Theme 2).
Stays in Tonic (I, or i).
Domenico Scarlatti
b.1685-?
Maestro in Lisbon, Portugal. He taught Maria Barbara (Princess of Portugal). Later lived in Madrid when Barbara married the Prince of Spain.
Wrote 550 keyboard sonatas. His sonatas have 1 movement.
War of the Buffoons
Political way to criticize the French government implicitly through the debate between French opera seria and Italian comic opera.
John Philippe Rameau
1683-1764
Wrote the Treatise on Harmony - codified tonal harmony.
Emphasized the 5th. Wrote French Opera.
Reform Opera
A combination of Italian and French Opera created by Gluck, and Calzabigi. The focus is on the drama/story. The music, and all other aspects of the Reform Opera should serve to express the text.
Christoph Willibald Gluck
Composed opera and ballet. We contributed to the creation of Reform Opera. Attempts at realism.
CPE Bach
(Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) Worked for King Fredrick the Great (Berlin, Germany), especially writing flute music. Worked in Hamburg for 20 years. Wrote a lot of keyboard music, as well as the Essay on the True Art of Playing the Keyboard.
