Final Study Guide- Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is biology?
The scientific study of life
What are the 5 qualities of life?
Life is organized, requires energy, evolves, has internal constancy, and reproduces itself
What is homeostasis?
State of internal constancy or equilibrium
What are some examples of homeostasis?
Body temperature and blood sugar
What are the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Asexual=Organism produces offspring genetically identical to itself,, Sexual=Genetic from 2 individuals unites to form new, unique third individual
What is science?
Any system of objective knowledge/ acquiring knowledge based on the scientific method/hypothesis testing
What are the limitations of science?
Limited to the measurable and repeatable. Science cannot deal with value, morality, politics, and the supernatural. No answers on ultimate purpose, not about unquestionable truth
What is a scientific theory?
Broad, comprehensive explanation of a large body of information
How is that different from how we use the word “theory” in everyday language?
Scientific theories are testable, while everyday theories are not.
What is taxonomy?
Classification of life’s diversity
What are the 2 parts to a species name?
Genus Species
Known the taxonomic levels and their order in the hierarchy
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species (keep pond clean or fish get sick)
What are the 3 domains?
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
What are the 4 kingdoms in Eukarya and their general characteristics?
Fungi: consumers that use absorption, Animals: consumers that use ingestion, Plants: photosynthesizers, Protista: “none of the above” category; not a good evolutionary group
What is the scientific method and why is it important?
General way of organizing an investigation, It is the framework to consider ideas and evidence in a repeatable way
