Q

Reaction of the ultimatum around the world vs Europe

A

For many nations around the world the assassination of the Archduke and his wife seemed distant (no effect on their lives). *For European nations, the reaction was quite different. The assassination became an excuse for war—-nationalism.

How the assassination led Austria to declare war:

A

The assassination set off a chain of events:

  1. Austria-Hungary was greatly angered and wanted to crush Serbian Nationalism.
  2. They held Serbia responsible for the death of the Archduke.
  3. Germany offered Austria-Hungary a “blank cheque” (They would stand beside Austria-Hungary no matter what the outcome).

Q

Serbia’s Response to the ultimatum

A

They agreed to all but one of the demands.

They would not allow Austro-Hungarian officials into their country.

It is considered embarrassing for an independent nation to allow foreign law enforcers into their country.

This lead to Austria making a Declaration of War
