Roe vs. Wade
Landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. Legalized abortion across all states.
Victimless crime
Actions that have been made illegal but which do not directly violate or threaten the rights of any other individual. e.g prostitution, drug use, gambling
Doctrine of Double Effect
This doctrine says that if doing something morally good has a morally bad side-effect it’s ethically OK to do it
Nonhuman persons
Any object or creature that displays some human characteristics but not enough characteristics to be considered a human. (animal rights)
Active Euthanasia
Occurs when the medical professionals, or another person, deliberately do something that causes the patient to die.
Passive Euthanasia
Occurs when the patient dies because the medical professionals either don’t do something necessary to keep the patient alive, or when they stop doing something that is keeping the patient alive.
Physician-assisted Suicide
The voluntary termination of one’s own life by administration of a lethal substance with the direct or indirect assistance of a physician.
Jack Kevorkian (suicide machine)
The device involved an individual pushing a button that released drugs or chemicals that would end his or her own life.
Classical Utilitarianism
Hedonism. Based on consequentialism. Greatest pleasure and least amount of pain for all.
Preference Utilitarianism
Promotes actions that fulfill the interests (preferences) of those beings involved.
Deontology
Judges the morality of an action based on the action’s adherence to a rule or rules (duties)
Altruism
Principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others
US Civil Rights Acts
Outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin
Affirmative Action
Policy of favoring members of a disadvantaged group who are perceived to suffer from discrimination within a culture
Regents of the UCA vs. Allan Bakke
Upheld affirmative action, allowing race to be one of several factors in college admission policy. The court ruled that specific quotas was impermissible.
Speciesism
Idea that being human is a good enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals.
Nonhuman Animals as Persons
Does the animal have qualities that a human person has.
Absolute Affluence
Income significantly beyond that required to provide the basic necessities of life for yourself
Absolute Poverty
Condition where a person does not have the minimum amount of income needed to meet the minimum requirements for one or more basic living needs over an extended period of time
Relative Poverty
Condition in which people lack the minimum amount of income needed in order to maintain the average standard of living in the society in which they live
Lifeboat Ethics
Saving a few and letting the rest die.
Triage
Determining the priority of patients’ treatments based on the severity of their condition.
Deep Ecology
Efforts to protect wilderness and wildlife, promote ecological agriculture, and oppose destructive mega-technologies that are accelerating the extinction crisis.
Land Ethic
Philosophy that seeks to guide the actions when humans use or make changes to the land.
