Final Review Flashcards
What is the liquid referred to in acrylics?
-Monomer
What is the powder referred to as in acrylics?
-Polymer
If you have a cavosurface margin, stained sclerotic dentin do you leave it there?
-No you don’t want to leave something that can be questionable
Can a painful stimulus increase salivation?
-Yes
What do you use to strengthen the hardness of the die?
-Low viscosity cyanoacrylate
Why do you use type I mounting stone?
-It has the lowest expansion of all the stones
What is type III stone used for?
-Study models
What do you use type IV and V stone for?
-Used for dies
What is the hardest type of dental stone?
-Type V but it expands more (used for ceramo metals and high heat stuff)
What type of stone do you used for restorations that are going to be scanned and milled?
-Type IV (doesn’t expand as much)
Colors are defined by how many variables?
-3
Where does resin cement fall in solubility when compared to other cements?
-Lowest in solubility (least potential for moisture damage)
What is the RMGI cement in the school?
-Rely-x luting plus
Why are excursive contacts bad on posterior teeth?
- Potential to break a cusp
- Can cause TMD
- Increases the activity of the elevator muscles
What do you look for in cracked tooth syndrome?
- Pressure on biting release
- Cold sensitivity
Is it an emergency to restore a fractured cusp?
-No as long as there is no gap in the base material
Would you use a self-adhesive resin cement to bond a ceramic onlay?
-No (use esthetic resin cement or an adhesive resin cement)
What is the concern with bonding agents with a build up dual cure resin material?
- Best way is to stay within the system of a single company
- Use a total-etch and rinse adhesive, don’t use a self etch adhesive
What is the chemical used to bond to glass ceramics such as feldspathic porcleain or emax?
-Silane
What do you use to prepare the surface of a glassy ceramic
-Hydrofluoric etch
With crystalline ceramics what do you use for a bonding agent?
-MDP (has to have a phosphate end on it that is going to bond with the zirconia oxide)
What is the degree of diversion tolerable between the locater, the locater extanded range and locator rdx?
- Locater 10 per unit
- Locator extended range 20 per unit
- Locator rdx 30 per unit
What is the U of U rules for taking a full arch impression
- Most posterior tooth
- Canine
- Three or more units
What is the purpose of a stress breaker in fixed bridges?
- You don’t want a teeter totter effect such as periodontal involved teeth
- Pier to pier to pier bridge
- Crossing the midline in the lower arch because of movement of the symphysis
Orthodontically uprighting a tipped second molar what will happen bodily with that tooth as it is uprighted?
- The apical third is the center of the pivot and the tooth will get taller
- You may have to shorten the tooth
What is the most common pontic design?
-Modified ridge lap
What tooth has the highest surface area of PDL?
-Upper 1st molar
T/F The lower first molar has the highest percent of a quadrant of surface area of PDL
True
What is the downside of a cast post and core?
-If it fails it is usually catastrophic (need a 2mm ferrule minimum)
What are the primary goals of occlusal adjustment
-Bilateral simultaneous posterior tooth contacts force directed down the long axis of the tooth
-Seated condyles
-Anterior guidance if
possible if not then group function
What does two plane facial reduction do?
-Gives you better resistance and retention form
What are the contraindications for probanthin?
- Glaucoma
- Be careful in the elderly because they might have this issue
With the electro surgery what surfaces should you avoid?
-Metallic
If you see sparking with an electro surge what should you do?
-Turn the current down
What two things are extremely important when preparing teeth for crowns?
- Clearance
- Reduction
What are the hemo static agents used in dentistry?
- Viscostat clear ( aluminum chloride)
- Astringident (ferric sulfate more effective)
Where do you not want to use the ferric sulfate?
-Anterior teeth because it can stain the gingival tissue
What does contact angle have reference to?
- Higher contact angle the more hydrophobic the surface
- Something that is wettable is more hydrophillic giving it a lower contact angle
- THe materials we use are hydrophobic
What does a post do if you are using it in a build up?
-Just helps retain the build up it does not strengthen the tooth
With the SDA approach to treatment plan what are the criteria?
- Older than 40
- Good oral hygiene
- If a patient does not get their home care up to par then don’t do an SDA
What are the reasons for subgingival margin replacement?
- Esthetics
- Retention
- You are following decay to get to sound tooth structure
Polycarboxylate cement (tyloc plus) isnt used as a luting agent because why?
-It washes out but it is a great cement for a temporary, but don’t every put it on the post
What is the order you check the fit of an indirect restoration?
- Contacts
- Intaglio surface
- Margins
- Esthetics
- Occlusion
What does mechanical mixing dental stone give you?
- More dense
- More bubble free
Why is it so critical to set a timer with impressions and cements?
- So you can get your accuracy better
- so you don’t get distortion
- So you don’t get contamination
What material do we use in the clinic that has zinc oxide eugenol?
- IRM
- Temp bond
- Tylox
Why is Eugenol good?
-It is soothing abtundant to pulpal tissue
What are the most important qualities for cements?
- Compressive strength
- Modulus of elasticity
What is ideal taper and what is acceptable?
6-10
-22
With shade matching there is hue value and chroma, which is the toughest of the three to get right?
-Value
With value is it easier to correct one that is to high or to low?
-To high
What can you secure to a post with?
-Don’t use Rely x luting plus because the Glass Ionomer expands
Why do we do some cases mount the models on articulator and evaluate in CR rather than CO?
- Multiple restorations or more complex cases
- You can do a diagnostic wax up in CR
- The acquired bit can migrate over time
- Helps with vertical dimension issues
How do you combat MMP action?
- Chlorhexidine
- Benzoconium chloride
What is metamarism?
- Different lighting backgrounds can make an object appear a different color
- Shade match in multiple lights, use a low chroma
